On Tuesday 14 August, Avenel Golf Club hosted the Annual Victorian Veterans' Sandscrape Championships. On the Sunday prior to the championship, all the sponsors were invited to enjoy a day of golf and a catered meal in the evening. Then on Monday, a game of 4BBB was played as a warm-up to the championship. With a large field entered, a great day was had by all.

Winners of the 4-ball event were local players Alan White and Neil Gunther with 46 stableford points. Runners-up were B Knight and L McKenzie (both from Eaglehawk) with 44 pts. Third place went to D Trewarn (Neangar Park) and B Rodda (Eaglehawk) with 43 pts on a countback from J Ryan and P Boyle (both Neangar Park). NTP on the 5th: T Downie (Shepparton), 8th: R Mau (Lancefield), 14th: D Trewarne (Neangar Park), 18th: N Roe (Mt Martha). The day was topped off with another wonderful meal in the evening.

On to the big event, the championship itself: best gross score and Sandscrape Champion for 2007 was Daryl Dunford from Chalambar with a score of 80 shots. Runner-up was Alan White of Avenel with 82.

The winner of A Grade 18 holes nett was Alan Axford (Traralgon) 82-12-70. Runner-up was Eric Hansford (Terang) 84-12-72. B Grade went to Ian O’Shea (Neangar Park) 85-17-68, runner-up John Foley (Bandiana) 86-17-69. C Grade winner was Peter Boyle (Neangar Park) 90-20-70 and runner-up was Peter Lynch (Avenel) 91-20-71. The best overall nett score of the tournament and winner of the Alfred Jones Memorial Trophy was Peter Boyle (Neangar Park) with 70.

August has been a very busy month at Avenel and the annual Ladies' Tournament was also held in the past week, on Thursday 16 August. Winner of A Grade Scratch was Dale Stuart with 83 shots. Handicap went to Patsy Ryan with 70 on a countback from Editha Ott. B Grade scratch went to Helen Findlay with 97 on a countback from Sue Donovan. Best nett score went to Pam Peddar with 70, runner-up Judy Wills with 72. NTP on the 5th was Judy Wills and on the 18th Mavis Brierly. Winner of the Veterans' event was Patsy Ryan, on a countback from Editha Ott and Pam Peddar.

The Club would like to sincerely thank all the sponsors who helped to make the Sandscrape Championship such a wonderful, successful event. A big thank you must also be given to all those members who worked tirelessly for many months leading up to this big event and especially in the past few weeks. The course was presented in immaculate condition and the hospitality offered to visitors was second to none. Thanks go to all.

Local golf results: on Saturday 18 August the ladies played a par event and the winner of the day was Sue Donovan with +5 on a countback from Yvonne Sloper. NTP on the 5th was Sue Donovan and on the 18th Monica Weichmann.

On the same day, the men played a stroke event. The winner was Ash Pedder 86-13-73 and runner-up was Dale Smith with 86-9-77. NTP on the 18th went to Dennis McGregor.
