Old photographs not only bring back fond memories of one’s own family members, they can also be valuable records of people who might not otherwise have been photographed.
Pictorial records of single or childless people are often wasted because there is no direct descendent to treasure them. Others may be lost due to destruction of personal property, for example by flood or fire.
Many collectors of historical memorabilia are keen to collect photographs of groups or sporting teams. These are always of interest for use in exhibitions or displays associated with anniversaries, such as the Nagambie Historical Society’s ‘Beyond the Limit’ tribute to local athletes, in association with the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
So, if you have any individual achievement or group photos in your own memorabilia, it is a good idea to have them copied for the benefit of your local historical group. You never know when the people pictured will become of interest to future generations.
