The resolution of a small community's dispute over the location of a waste disposal facility in its immediate area was celebrated with the unveiling of a plaque at Violet Town on Australia Day 2006.

A State Government decision early in 2004 to locate a "toxic dump" on Baddaginnie farmland galvanised the local community into action. Public protests were held, letters written, banners shaken and meetings arranged with relevant Government Ministers and staff. Local resident and cartoonist for Melbourne's The Age newspaper, Mr Michael Leunig, lent his support by drawing the world's largest cartoon, of a "Guardian Angel" that was used to attract attention to the community's predicament.

In May 2004, there was much rejoicing as news was received that the Government had reviewed its decision and decided to locate its waste disposal facility elsewhere. It was later decided that a plaque to commemorate the occasion should be commissioned for mounting on the wall of the Violet Town community Centre, to mark this resounding victory for democracy.

Although the plaque had not yet been mounted as of Australia Day 2006, it was ready to go up, and Michael Leunig was called upon to say a few words and perform the unveiling in line with the celebration of Australia's free and democratic society.
