They came from Melbourne, they came from the Strathbogies and Euroa, but most of all, they came from Merton, to the inaugural Merton Ball.

Most, of course, came by car, but some even came by plane. More than 150 people, dressed in their finery, converged on the Merton airfield to enjoy a wonderful evening last Saturday night.

The ball was held in the plane hangar and was organised by a committee of local women who were determined to see Merton have a night of fun and glamour. Theme for the night was a blend of flying and horse-racing, with funds raised going to organise children’s activities and Fashions on the Field at the Merton Races on New Year’s Day.

Airfield owner Jim Sayer came dressed as flight captain and acted as MC for the night. He was assisted by three flight attendants, led by the Australian School-based Apprentice of the Year for 2008, Melinda Stephens from Mansfield. Mel, along with her friends Cody and Shannon, later changed from flight uniforms to race-day fashions (designed by Mel) to assist Rodwells auctioneer Adam Mountjoy, who raised $5,000 by selling off various donations from supporters of the event.

After a delicious dinner, guests danced till midnight to the music from local band Smac.

The ball committee of Lou Munro, Maree Fox, Trudy Berriman, Eavis Cummins, Wendy Oates, Lynnda Heard, Angela Tough, Myrtle Dinsdale and Glad Rickard should take a bow. Their hard work was much appreciated by all.
