Norman Beechey, one of the most aggressive and flamboyant racing drivers in Australian motor racing history, pursued his love of classy motors all the way to the 2009 Euroa Show 'n' Shine on 4 October.
Renowned for his spectacular car control and crowd-pleasing style, it was fitting that he was affectionately christened “Storming Norman” by legions of enthusiastic fans across the country.
In a relatively brief but spectacular sixteen-year career, Norm Beechey claimed two Australian Touring Car titles as well as countless other race wins and lap records.
Norm’s star began to rise in 1956 after claiming a surprise win against the nation's top touring-car racers at Albert Park.
His trademark “pedal to the metal” driving style proved well-suited to the high powered American muscle cars of the 1960s, and the crowds loved him for it.
In total, Norm competed in 27 different touring cars in over 16 years, during which time he also received factory support from GMH, Ford and Chysler. He claimed his last Touring Car victory in 1970 before announcing his retirement. As a part-time racer and businessman, he said he could no longer compete in equal terms with full-time professionals.
Twenty years later, however, Norm could no longer resist the temptation to return to the sport he loved so much. 1992 he started competing in classic car rallies at the wheel of the mighty Chevrolet Impala, which had helped to carve his reputation in the 1960s. And to this day “Storming Norman” is showing no signs of slowing down...
