While all of Victoria is at risk of bushfire this summer, 52 Victorian communities have been identified as higher risk locations.
These high-risk areas have been identified based on scientific research, historic fire season information, rainfall and the impact of climate change, as well as geographic factors including road access.
They include large and small communities surrounded by bush, outer suburbs of Melbourne, regional cities and holiday locations.
Township Protection Plans are being developed by fire agencies in conjunction with local councils, Victoria Police, the State Government and the community.
They will be in place in these 52 communities for the 2009/10 fire season. The plans will provide residents with additional information that will assist them to make their Bushfire Survival Plan.
As part of the plan, residents and visitors will receive a map of the township showing hospitals, fire stations and access roads. They will also receive advice on how to obtain the latest fire and weather updates and local contact information.
Residents in the 52 identified communities will also receive a kit, which will help them to develop their Bushfire Survival Plan.
The Bushfire Survival Plan Kit is available to all Victorians by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (VBIL) on 1800 240 667 or go to www.cfa.vic.gov.au
