As the weather warms up, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) is urging residents to prepare their homes for the coming fire season.

CFA Acting Manager Community Safety, Alex Caughey, says the community should be taking every opportunity to prepare homes and properties.

“Now is the time to get prepared,” said Mr Caughey.

“A lot of people will have their Saturday and Sunday afternoons back to themselves now the football season has ended, so get outside and do the work.

“It’s the perfect time to be looking at the odd jobs around homes and taking action. Check for repairs and maintenance around the house that need doing, because embers from a fire will target those weak spots.”

Mr Caughy said that when you are evaluating your house for fire risk, every nook and cranny must be looked at as a potential threat. However while preparing their house is crucial, families must also plan their gardens, making sure they understand the bushfire risk in their area.

“Where are the plants and trees, which of them are most likely to ignite during fires, how close are they to my house... those are the questions people need to be asking themselves,” Mr Caughey said.

CFA is recommending that all residents prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan and practise the plan regularly.

To assist residents in developing a Bushfire Survival Plan, CFA is conducting free information sessions throughout the north-east of Victoria. To find a session near you, consult the website www.cfa.vic.gov.au or contact the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.
